The Language of (un)Truth
Brief
Investigate the significance of an influential book at the time of publication and the subsequent impact the work has had in shaping world views.
Response
‘The Language of (un)Truth’ is a publication that explores how George Orwell’s novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ has influenced how we view everyday speech, communication during political events, and the language surrounding technological advancements. I focused on the topic of truth and deceptive language which is very relevant in our era of fake news, social media, and populist political leaders.
Through aesthetic nods to oppressive regimes and documents of absolute truth, the publication echoes and amplifies Orwell’s encouragement to seek truth in a world overcome with disinformation.
I designed interactive elements throughout the publication such as tip-ins, fold-out posters, die cuts and an interactive red filter bookmark for the reader to actively decipher the ‘doublespeak’, and bring this new analytical mindset into their daily lives.
